Galapagos - when to go, suggestions etc. welcome

My fiance and I are wanting to take our honeymoon next year by travelling to the Galapagos... so any suggested groups/tours (we like independent travel, but it looks like tours are the only way to go for this area of the world!) and experiences would be much appreciated. I have looked online and in books but personal experiences/suggestions are valuable to me! Thanks!
