I'm looking to backpack from Lima, Peru to Santiago, Chile via Bolivia or vice versa. I have 6 weeks from about the end of may to mid july (flight not bought yet). Is it do able in 6 weeks and what should i not miss in Bolivia and Chile en-route.

From Bolivia there is a direct bus to Arica in Chile. Otherwise you can take a trip from Uyuni to San Pedro de Atacama. Also I know that is a possibility to cross the border in Ollague by train (but i haven't tried this option). If you are travelling in Bolivia the most interesting thing to see/do are :
- take a bike ride from La Cumbra to Coroico - very picturesque
- Potosi and its mines
- Sucre - cosy capital of Bolivia
- Salar de Uyuni - excellent salt desert close to Chilean Border.
In Chile very interesting is San Pedro de Atacama.
For more details you can look in my travel log. I've been there in February so the informations are quite updated.

Ive now booked my trip 26 May to July 7. I'm intending to travel to Lima to Nazca, from there to Machu Picchu, on to lake Titicaca, La Paz, San Vicente where Butch and Sundance died. Cross into Chile, down to Santiago and home. This is My first proper backpacking trip having to get from point A, to point B, in a set amount of time. Is it possible to see all of this in 6 weeks? Any tips or advice would be great or if you in the area at that time it would be nice to meet another GLOBOsapien. Mark<p>[ This Message was edited by: fiftynotes on 2008-04-20 17:27 ]
