San Pedro de Atacama and Salar de Uyuni

Though I know my way round here I want to go to San Pedro de Atacama and then on the Salar de Uyuni tour. Does anyone know of good places to stay on a budget in San Pedro? And which of the tour operators are the best in the price/ service department? Is it better to start in Uyuni and then head to San pedro? I greatly appreciate any help.
