Almonaster la Real, to give it its full name is located in the lovely Sierra de Aracena, the western extremity of the Sierra Morena, which practically separates Andalucia from the rest of Spain. There are buses [but don't trust advice from the company on the phone. Ask your hotel or the Aracena TIC] and a station that is actually closer to Cortegana but for most a manageable walk.
It is one of those really lovely but not widely celebrated vilages with great waymarked walks all around and a fine centre for wildlife. However its main feature is a splendid hilltop example of a fortified mosque [now a church used very occasioally]. Fragments of the earlier Visigothic church, itself using as pillar bases stones of an even earlier Roman temple, can be seen. For a really god place to stay, see travel tip. [edit text][editors]
