León in north Spain is a fine modern city with a number of major attractions.
One of these is the Casa de Botines, one of the limited number of Gaudi's works to be found outside of his native Barcelona. The The Convento de San Marcos, formerly the house of the Knights of Santiago, is now reckoned to be one of Spain's very finest Paradors.
However there are two quite superlative attractions. One is the cathedral where the stained glass must surely rank as some of the world's best. The other is a marvel in miniature.
The Collegiate Church of San Isidoro, itself well worth a visit, has a separate entrance to the mausoleum of the Kings of Leon. You have to pay but don't be put off. The ceiling frescoes are astonishingly vivid and the painter clearly had a lively sense of humour. Artefacts in the Treasury are stunning and the collection of ancient books in the Library will take your breath away. [edit text]  [editors]
