There are two excellent things about Los Cotos. The first is getting there and the second is being there.
Getting there only costs €10 return from Madrid. First you take the Cercanias line of Renfe to Cercedilla (on the way to Segovia.) Then from Cercedilla there is a scenically superb narrow gauge railway, single track in many parts. The views are majestic, first to the left and then, after passing through a tunnel, to the right.
The joy of being there wil vary with the season. for winter there is a ski station. In the height of summer there are meadows to laze in - but in spring and autumn there are beautiful walks to be enjoyed. At the Casa del Parque Natural de Peñalara (you won't miss it) friendly advice is obtainable about the distance and steepness of walks. The simplest is a contour track for the majority of its route.
