Tarragona lies south of Barcelona and north of Valencia on the railway line between them with plenty of trains. If its not one of the best cities in Spain for Roman remains others [except Merida] should be trumpeting their claims louder. There are two fora, one provincial and one local, a splendid archaeological museum, an amphitheatre overlooking the attractive coast, a necropolis not far out and, a bus ride away, a wonderful aqueduct [see travel tip.]
However the Roman remains are not the only attractions in the city. Older yet are the huge stones that form the base of the wall winding all round the edge of the town beyond the cathedral. Follow what is called the archaeological passage for this.
The old and new Ramblas are OK but not a patch on their Barcelona equivalent. Get up above the old Rambla into the olt town with its steep streets. [edit text][editors]
