Where El Cid worshipped - so they say

Zamora is surprisingly little known, although it is one of the fine old cities of Spain like nearby Salamanca. Perhaps it is the profusion of Romanesque churches there. If there were fewer, they might well be counted as specific sights. As it is you tend to read that there are no specific sights other than the Cathedral. Or is it simply proximity to Salamanca whose splendid Plaza Mayor surpasses others around. For all that, Zamora's Plaza Mayor is good enough, with steep streets dropping to the river and Roman bridge below and streets of art nouveau shops going one way, those with the great little churches the other.
Looking out from the walls, you can see one very plain Romanesque church but it still has an important historical claim - that El Cid worshipped there.
The Cathedral is a stunning building from the outside, though it, like everything else, is closed on Mondays. On other days try to visit the museum of the Semana Sancta. [edit text] [editors]
