Dambulla is about 70 kms from Kandy and can be covered as a day-trip from Kandy. Dambulla is best known for the marvellous cave temple complex which is also a World Heritage site. There are about 150 statues of Lord Buddha spread over 5 caves. There are also a few statues of Hindu gods. The Buddha statues and paintings are thought to date back to 1st century BC(with lot of modications/additions over the years).
You need to climb up the steps cut into the rock-face to reach the top where the caves are. Footwear is not allowed inside the cave temples. However, do cover your feet with layers and layers of socks while climbing up the rock to avoid burning your feet. Also, for all foreigners, a ticket is required to be purchased from the ticket centre at the bottom which is checked for at the top before you enter the cave. [edit text][editors]
