The ancient city of Anuradhapura(a World Heritage site) dates back to 4th century BC. It was the capital of Sinhala kingdom for a very long period till 11th century AD. It is a humbling experience to see the remains of stupas, dagobas, irrigation tanks, houses all so well planned and developed even in those ancient times.
Sights :
1. Ruwanveli Seya stupa - raised in 2nd century BC by emperor Dutugamunu.
2. Abhayagiri Dagoba - largest monastery complex here.
3. Jetavanaramaya Stupa - over 400 feet in height. It is said to be the third largest structure in ancient world after the Giza pyramids.
4. Sacred Bo Tree - Said to be a branch of the very same Sacred Bo tree under which Lord Buddha attained enlightenment. [edit text][editors]
