My two top travel Globo heroes are travelling in this moment. Wojteck has just left Ushuaia heading to Antarctica Peninsula and Dani Serralta just entered Turkey from Syria. I know that Gloria James just came from India, and that Tashi could not get into Lybia from Tunisia, but in compensation she enjoyed Mexico very much and provided us a lot of useful travel tips.

Unfortunately I do not travel much myself, basically around Spain following concerts of my musical groups in different Spanish cities. But thanks to the active Globo members I travel with my imagination with them.

That is why I think that it would be a cool idea if in Globo you would create a section called, for example: “Where are they now travelling?” a kind of Travel map with our active members, and with a single click you could see a list of the Globomembers travelling at that moment.

I know that there are already the Travel Logs, but if you are not connected to Internet everyday (which is my case) you can not follow them. Instead, if this section would exist, then at once you could know whereabout are they. Of course, provided that the members themselves would agree to advise Globo where are they travelling and reporting regularly their movements and exploits.

I think that this would be a succesful improvement and our passive members would click to know the development of our active travellers, a kind of travellers newspaper. For instance: today 27th February Daniserralta is in Istanbul ready to take his bus to Tesalonika and Meteora, Wojciech is in his ship to Malvinas islands near Antarctica heading to Sandwich islands, Davidx is back from Portugal, Gloria is already in Kajuraho watching the erotic Indian statues, Downdergal is in Laos admiring the temples of Luang Prabang but soon will come to Spain, my friend Horourke is in London for work, Mistybleu is in Trinidad and Tobago enjoying carnival, Eirekay is in Belize snorkelling, Rangutan is swimming in Miami beach and soon will go back to Munich to particpate in the drinking beer festival…etc.

What do you think? That would unite our members more and everybody would get envolved and participating on other’s travels.

Just my two cents

Wow!

That was a really impressive list of who's been where and who's going where and who's on the road as we speak. I am impressed that you could possibly recall all that info!

I also think that this is a wonderful idea. I was actually just wondering if eirekey was away somewhere as she always gives so much input and I hadn't seen much from her and I have just realised she has just popped back up on globo again.

I also believe that Andy is away studying and all development is on hold at the moment but it certainly food for thought for later on especially if you could just upload the places you were to visit on your next trip.

Cheers,

Kerrie

Thank you, Kerrie and Ravindekumarsi, for your answers.

The idea is: there exist an interactive map in the web (it can be discharged for free) which shows the map of the world, with tiny naïf style icons (like puppets and dolls) representing whereabout are the travellers. It is funny. You just pass your mouse over the puppet on a given country in Africa or South America and it appears a phrase telling, more or less: “greetings from Timbuktu”, or “I am enjoying Pernambuco!” Then, if you want to know further about that traveller, you just click on his/her Travel log.

If this mechanism would exist in Globo (inside Travel log, for example), I think that it would be the first section that I would have a look at every time that I connect Globosapiens. Imagine 20 or more of our active travleers represented in that map! It would be likeable, interesting and funny.

I was thinking about this the last days, how it could be realised, find the idea genial. Every special feature that makes GLOBO more different, makes it a more special website.

For an automatic clickable map all current databank destinations, also those "new found landmarks" will need geographical co-ordinates designated to them, 600000 I think and an input page designed where a traveller can enter date and location and change them also along the way. Very simple at the start would be list for each day in the future and past who is out of town and where. An intern or secretary could manually fix the taps everyday on a map updating it. Everything is possible for an automatic updatable map in a few years to come and this brilliant idea must always be considered as an improvement. Perhaps there is an IT-student out there who would like to do this feature as a project, disertation or thesis?

I wonder also if GLOBOmembers cross paths on the road just days or hours appart and suppose we often even meet each other in public areas without knowing it?

I have found this active map for free in the web:

http://www.bravenet.com/webtools/guestmap/index.php

Perhaps should be a good idea to implement it in Globo to follow up our active members travel activities around the world, for the enjoyment (and jealousy!) of those of us members who do not travel very much.

Where are all the GLOBOmembers on the road? They busy! :-) Re-thinking, instead of some complicated map, members should just simply log in and do picture, log or guestbook updates on the road from internet cafes or post offices like most do weekly. Otherwise ask friends post or telephonically to do some short feed-back now and again for GLOBO! RR :- (

Today, by chance, I have learnt that wojciech dabrowski has written about the developments of his present trip around Antarctica and South Atlantic islands, like the mythical Ernest Shackelton, and now he is in Tristan da Cunha heading to Saint Helena. What he describes about those unknown islands is so appealing …! He wrote that travel log yesterday, 23rd march, but I did not see it because the dates of his diary were up to the 19th march.

If we had implemented the map with the movements of all Globomembers on the road, then you could check automatically every day. But since this system does not exist, perhaps it would be a good idea to add a note during 24 hours in Globo front page saying that the member “so and so” has just introduced a travel log, otherwise most of the members will miss that excellent information.

For your information:

Dani Serralta is already home in Spain after 9 months on the road!

His father, Fede, confirms this point in another forum. He is in good health, and soon will contribute to Globo with a selection of the over 2000 pictures that he took in Africa!
