West of Aleppo on a small treeless hill the colonnaded basilica of Mushabbaq is situated. It is said to be the best preserved one of the monuments of the Dead Cities, the ancient agricultural settlement nearby. It seems to have been a stopover for the pilgrims going to the sanctuary of Saint Simeon, eight kilometres away fromAleppo. The small church with its three naves and round arched windows was probably built in the 5th century after Saint Simeon. The cistern is used by the inhabitants of a small farm on the hill. It is impressive and moving when you visit it in the evening when the sun goes down and the muezzins are calling. [edit text]  [editors]
