Chiang Mai travel tips

Pizzadilla
How can you argue with a restaurant whose slogan is "Everything Flat with Everything on Top of That"? Pizzadilla is an Italian/Mexican restaurant just two close blocks down from the Night Market. They serve other Italian and Mexican dishes but the house specialty is pizzas and quesadillas. After weeks of spicy Thai chilli peppers, a nice veggie pizza on thin crust hit the spot! more

Raming Lodge
36 room boutique hotel in a PERFECT location. Three short blocks from the Night Market on one side and two blocks from the main canal on the other. I had read that it was in the "Red Light District" but, aside from one or two side streets, we weren't aware of it. We walked night & day w/o any hassle. Rooms were nicely and recently done, service was good, and the distance from the Night Market was enough to allow coming and going w/o being hit on by every tout. A good choice of Restaurants down the street, and the restaurant in Ramings is actually quite good! more

Night Train!! State Railway of Thailand
Clean, efficient, and altogether the best night train service I've ever experienced! We traveled 2nd class, air-conditioned sleeper for the 14 hour trek from Chiang Mai back to Bangkok for under $25 US. The seats are in pairs facing each other, providing lots of leg room. A luggage rack/ladder is at every set of seats. At around 8:30pm the porter converts the seats to sleepers and hangs drapes, making them comfortably private. Book a lower berth when possible as they are darker and the air conditioning isn't blowing right on you, but the berths are roomy, clean and well linened, the food, at $6 US for a four course meal, was excellent (although the morning coffee you can pass on), and the ride was smooth. Book an express which has fewer stops. We left Chiang Mai at 4:30pm and arrived in Bangkok at 7am - PERFECT! more
