Hi GLOBO's

There were some questions about Night shots around. I would try to give some hints and tips.

To capture good night shots you need these items:

- somewhere to put your camera on (preferably a tripod)

- a camera that is capable of manual shutter speed setting

- a camera with self timer function (or remote control wired/infrared)

- a good view and interesting subject

- manual focus setting

I uploaded a series of night shots I did form Viktoria Peak Hong Kong to illustrate some points:

http://www.globosapiens.net/mortimer/pictures_hong-kong_31.html

Number 4 was about the first shot when I tried to create an interesting subject, the I noticed the platform that was in the lower left corner and turned the camera to avoid it.

Number 3 the platform is no longer visible but the scene is not very interesting, it misses the building with the changing colors

Number 1 has a good composition the building with the changing colors is just off the middle to the left, the scene looks pretty harmonical. But is slightly overexposed.

Number 2 is just a bit better with the scene the building on the left side that is cut of in number 1 is not longer visible. Also the exposition seams better than number 1

Number 5 is the same picture as 2 but is digitally altered a bit. The overall apearance on my screen is a bit better than in 2.

On my computer number 5 is, in my opinion, the best of all available pictures of this series.

I think these pictures illustrate well that composing a picture takes some shots and critical judgment when taking a picture. I did about 12 shots on the same subject to get a good one.

On some cameras you do have an automated function to take three shots in a row one with the measured av setting, one a little bit lower and the third one a little bit higher. When using this you should normally get at least one good shot.

For thes pictures I used my Canon EOS 300, with 400 iso film. As base for the camera I used one of the big sturdy binoculars where you can put in a coin and get a closer look at the view, as I had no tripod with me. For the shutter speed I tried with something from 10 to 30 seconds.

Anybody would like to add or comment?

Martin

Some points about digital photography:

Use the lowest possible ISO setting in order to avoid too much noise on your pics

Use long time values and make loads of shots to get a good one eventually

Did I already say to use a Tripod?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Im learning too. I noticed that with my (simple) digital camera that it does not even focus properly if theres not enough light! My 35mm compact camera was a disaster at night unless the subject was within 6 meters of the flash, city lights hardly succesfull.

Ive been noting some spectacular pics at GLOBO for a while on this topic because there are so few of them, suppose because its so DIFFICULT to take them. Please post more experiences and samples here of night-shots, the ones ive found are:

I collected these over the last few months, those in the first list below I rated ***** and find increadible achievements in night photography. The last 4 in this list were rated ** or *** by others when I found them. Perhaps we can add notes to them and rate them correctly?

I love night photography perhaps because I love the night lights so much and the challenge of capturing the night atmosphere in a picture... Rudi

Rudi

As always you do a enormous job looking all those pics up for us!

A more efficient search function would help a lot with finding those pics...

Thank you very much for helping improve the quality of images here :-)

Have a great day

Martin
