I generally try to rate photos but I have been busy on a newsletter recently so I have missed a lot. Hence I don't know how long the comments have appeared beside the *s when we rate.
I think there are some considerable benefits here. Some members seem unhappy when they get a 3* grade. The coment makes it clear that it is quite a commendation. Also it is easier to use a 1* rating, where appropriate. However it has rather gone from one extreme to another for 1*. I agree that the comment should not be rude but it does seem necessary to be able to express disapproval. Perhaps 'Thanks, but - -' would be better, in that it encourages people using a 1* rating to write a comment on why it only gets the lowest grade.

I like the concept of leaving it open like 'Thanks, but ---' as it does encourage leaving comments. It would be great for all rating given to be accompanied with comments. I know I did not always leave comments in my early days at Globo but now, I often leave comments even if I don't rate.
