Back in the 1700s Tobago was an independent colony with Scarborough as its capital and it was the scene of many power struggles between the French and English for ownership, with the English finally retaining control.
Scarborough was chosen as the capital to facilitate the export of sugar owing to its harbour. It sits on the shores of Rockley Bay and is protected by the hills containing Fort George (with wonderful panoramic views of the city) and westwardly Dutch Fort.
Downtown the centre is dominated by a mall and market place, opposite the wharf, where the Lynx (as sea catamaran) can be caught to take a trip to Trinidad. On Friday evenings Scarborough is a site of great excitement, as locals take the time to hang out in town ushering the weekend. [edit text][editors]
