Travel guide to Matmata

Tunisian Oasis

Matmata is a small place in the mountainous part of the eastern Sahara. The town is famous for its Troglodyte houses, built by the Berber populations in a form of holes in the sand leading to underground chambers, allowing to escape the heat. These structures were famously used in the Star Wars movies. And this is why so many travellers come here. A few movie set pieces still remain in situ, and many of them would not want to miss that. Other than that, although the households are truly pretty, there is not that much to see in Matmata. The surroundings are rather barren with stoney desert surrounding everything.
