Mahdia is is a small town 50 km south of Sousse. The old centre or medina is lined with sea-worn white houses. Old men sit in the shade sipping coffee while younger ones are busy in the weaving workshops.
The Skifa el Kahla is a reconstruction of an old city gate and part of the defense wall which made Mahdia into a stronghold. These days Mahdia is a peaceful fishing port and tourists stroll through the medina full of souvenir shops. The main tourists sights are the Great Mosque, the Fort or Borj el Kebir surrounded by a cemetery, the Archeological museum and Dar Sghir, a medina house turned into museum.
The 'zone touristique' stretches 8 km to the north and is dotted with some 30 hotels catering for package tourists. The beach is wide strip of soft sand, cleaned and raked every day. The Sahel Metro Station is half way the tourist zone.
Best time to visit is mid June – mid October, July and August are very crowded. Autumn and winter are not suited for a beach holiday.
