Kisoro is a small village at the Uganda/Zaire (DRC) border at the feet of the giant Virunga Volcanoes. In the village itself, there is nothing to do. There is only one hotel and one very basic hostel. There are two reasons to come to Kisoro, though - 1/ the Mountain Gorillas are just few hours of trekking away; 2/ the Pygmies of the Central Africa live nearby, who appreciate every visit. Although the border crossing is not officially open for foreigners, the officers are easily incentivised to turn a blind eye. The gorillas often cross borders so, one who comes to see them, has to be prepared to go for it. At the end of 2008 and beginning of 2009, the area on the the Zaire side is not safe due to rebels, bandits and militia fighters. [edit text][editors]
