Travel guide to Achfary
Achfary is quite an unexpected village to find on the A838 after a rather bleak drive from Lairg towards Laxford Bridge in the northwest of Scotland. It was built in the late 19th century to house workers on the Duke of Westminster’s sporting estates and is strikingly pretty in an area where the attraction of most villages is owed to there location rather than their character.
However its location lacks nothing as it’s sandwiched between Arkle, a mountain that appeals most from a distance and Ben Stack, not high enough to attract peak baggers but enjoying any other attribute of a fine mountain. The top consists of a sort of double ridge and a gap between and the views are terrific – a connoiseur’s mountain.
To find other favourite mountains and beaches, start with Lochinver. [edit text]  [editors]
