A nice way to see the countryside is to drive or take a train to Salisbury and then take the 12-mile Scenic Cycle Route 45 along the winding country road ending in Amesbury.
Amesbury - a small town that sits on the banks of the Avon River and from here it’s a perfect location to go on to see Stonehenge. This prehistoric henge (meeting place) is world renowned and is being considered to be one of the new 7 wonders of the world.
Stonehenge is a world heritage site and even though no one’s completely sure why it was built it is more commonly thought of as a calendar; whereby on a monthly basis, the sun rises can be seen through each of the frames consecutively. It dates back some 7-8,000 years ago and the larger stone were brought from Marlborough Downs which is over 19 miles away, while the smaller stones are from Preseli Mountains in Wales which is 240 miles away, one can only image how these stones were brought here. It’s a fantastic place to visit. [edit text][editors]
