The A896 runs north from Locharron, near where a ferry used to cross from Strome, to Shieldaig, very near the southwest end of Upper Loch Torridon. From Tornapress on this road there is an unclassified road that used to provide the only route to Applecross, with only about 200 people easily the largest place on the shore of the large peninsula between these lochs. This road crosses the Bealach nam Bo [Pass of the Cattle], the highest road pass in Scotland. Many find it scary, with its hairpin bends and extremely steep slopes, to say nothing of its lack of width. Now there is an alternative route round the north coast of the peninsula from Shieldaig. If you’re not worried by the Bealach, you will enjoy the scenery of a circular trip.
Applecross itself has a large sandy bay and many return for family holidays years on end.
