Appletreewick is a real place, in spite of a name which sounds as though taken from a children's book. It is on the true left side of the river Wharfe in Yorkshire and is as picturesque as its name. It is only accessible by very narrow roads, never intended for motors when constructed.
Very close to the village is Parceval Hall and the beauty spot of Troller's Ghyll, noted for a mythical hound but actually worth seeing for its limestone beauty and its lead mining history.
A bit farther but within walking distance is Simon's Seat, also accessible on foot from Bolton Abbey by crossing the foobridge near the Priory. The Strid [potentially dangerous] forms an exciting stretch of the Wharfe in the neighbourhood. [edit text][editors]
