Beverley is out of range for many visitors from abroad, being on Yorkshire's east coast. Many UK citizens don't know much about it either. This leaves it deplorably underrated.
It was the County Town of the East Riding of Yorkshire and later of the County of Humberside that was created in 1974 and abolished in the late 90s, leaving a lovely county hall unused for a time.
It's a delightful market town with a very wide street as its centre and an old town gate that still takes traffic in and out on the north side.
A particular cause for pride comes in having two wonderful old churches with outstanding internal carvings, Beverley Minster and the 12th century S Mary's Church [http://www.stmarysbeverley.org.uk/]
Beverley has an attractive racecourse but take anything about the Army Transport Museum with several grains of salt. It's permanently closed. [edit text][editors]
