Travel guide to Blaenau Festiniog
Blaenau Ffestiniog is located on the route from the main part of Snowdonia to the Rhinog mountains, Cader Idris and on to Mid Wales. However Blaenau has three major appeals of its own. First, it's the inland terminus of the Porthmodog and Ffestiniog Railway, one of the most picturesque and interesting preserved railways in the UK, where initially slate was brought by wagons to the coast with just the force of gravity, the empty wagons to be pulled back by horses.
Second, it is the home of the Llechwedd Slate Caverns, a fine museum and a real enjoyment for adults and children alike.
Thirdly there's a really informative information centre at the hydroelectric plant at Tavygrisiau nearby, with an option of going up a really steep road to its dam on the fringe of the mine-ridden Moelwyn mountains. [edit text]  [editors]
