Language becomes a bit problematic here. The name 'Bolton Abbey' properly applies only to the village or the Duke of Devonshire's estate. However, many people mean the remains of an ecclesiastical building, which is actually Bolton Priory.
Having said all that, I can now say that the Priory ruins are immensely scenic. The building is not a total ruin, as the nave is still in use as the Parish Church, but the joy is in walking around the ruins and wandering down to and across the river.
There is a really enjoyable walk over the river and up to Simon's Seat and another up the Wharfe to the Strid, mightily picturesque, but potentially dangerous [see travel tips for both]. [edit text][editors]
