Travel guide to Buckland in the Moor

Buckland in the Moor is a tiny village between Ashburton and Widdecombe [of grey mare fame] in South Devon. A census this century shows less than 1000 population.

If you look at the pictures on http://www.picturesofengland.com/England/Devon/Buckland_in_the_Moor/pictures you will see that, in spite of its name, the village is in a leafy area on the fronge of the moor. Its thatched cotteges are some of the most picturesque in the county.

The church clock is notable for having the words 'MY DEAR MOTHER' on its face instead of figures.

A short walk away at Buckland Beacon [now you are on the moor proper] you can find two flat stones with the ten commandments inscribed on them. These were, according to Wikipaedia, inscribed in the 1920s and the mason wondered whether the inscriber of the original commandments also suffered from aches in the knees. [edit text] [editors]
