Caernarfon castle

Caernarfon's principal claim to fame is its magnificent castle, one of a number built by order of English King Edward I after he had defeated the Welsh princes, to hold the country down. It was at Caernarfon that he held up his newborn son, later Edward II, to 'give' the Welsh their own prince who oculd not speak a word of English - as he had promised. The eldest son of British monarchs has been invested as Prince f Wales ever since - though at a considerably older age.

There is also Segontium, a major Roman fort near the centre on the road t Beddgelert.

Caernarfon is a great centre for visiting Snowdonia, Lleyn and Anglessey. [edit text] [editors]
