Callanish [Calanais on an ordnance survey map] is noted for a particular set of stones – and they certainly are noteworthy – but you may not have realised that it is a place rich in remains, even apart from these. In the UK you’ll be looking at something second only to Stonehenge. The stones are Lewissean Gneiss, one of the world’s oldest rocks.
