Travel guide to Carloway
Dun Carloway [Dun Charlabhaigh] is one of the best preserved brochs in Scotland.
Brochs were erected in the first centuries BCE and CE and entailed a cicular area between two walls surrounding a courtyard. Thinking of the whole structure, you have a tower with a hollow at the centre. There is speculation that at least some may have been covered with a conical wooden ‘lid’. However, it was the area between the walls that gives most interest. It would seem that both people and animals lived on different floors within the concentric walls, each level having a wooden floor and being joined by stone steps.
The walls of this one are, at their highest, close to 7 metres high [once probably 13m] and the total diameter is nearly 14m nad the distance across the inner circle between 7 and 8m.
Although brochs are mainly found on the north-west mainland and the islands, one, Edin’s Hall, is not so far from the northeast border of England!
