Travel guide to Castlebay

Castlebay is on the delightful island of Barra in the Outer Hebrides, the Western Isles or the ‘Long Island, - take your pick. Car ferries ply from Oban on the mainland of Scotland or from Lochboisdale on another island of South Uist. There is also a passenger and bike ferry from the north tip of Barra to the south tip of South Uist.
Barra is connected with Vatersay to the south by road bridge.
Castlebay is the only significant town/village in the island. It’s descriptively named after a castle on an island in the bay and is extremely picturesque.
The island is not very big and at its narrowest there is very little distance between the ‘airport’ [A stretch of beach – therefore times of flights vary for tides!] on the east side and the opposite coast. It’s possible to be dropped off the island bus on the west and walk round the northernmost point to the airport in time to pick up the bus, when it meets the plane.
Seal Beach, further down the west side, also justifies its name. [edit text] [editors]
