Travel guide to Coniston
Coniston is situated by Coniston Water, which is west of, smaller than and roughly parallel with Lake Windermere. It is one of the lakes large enough to have boat trips and passenger ferries regularly in the season. Sadly it is best known for the death of Donald Campbell when his boat exploded while he was trying to break his own water speed record.

The village was centred on copper mining. It lies to the foot of a group of mountains centred on Coniston Old Man, which make a fine horseshoe walk.

John Ruskin, the 19th century poet, writer and art/social critic, o lived and died at Brantwood, an Arts and Crafts style house near the village. There is also a Ruskin Museum in the village. [edit text]  [editors]
