Durham is one of England's gems that many visitors from overseas miss.The tableau of the river, the castle and the cathedral is truly outstanding.
The cathedral is probably the most impressive Romanesque building in England. It was built in the 11th and 12th centuries, mainly to house the remains of St. Cuthbert and the venerable Bede. The castle protected the cathedral and formed the home of the Price Bishops, who ruled over the whole of northern England on behalf of the king.
