Travel guide to Durness
Durness is as near as you will get to the northwest tip of Scotland, Cape Wrath, in your own car. There is a road and a minibus will take you there – once you have taken the passenger [and bike] ferry across the Kyle of Durness. The lighthouse and cliffs of the Cape are scenic enough but in the nesting season, ask to be put off for Kearvaig for the magnificent bird cliffs to your north. Here you can almost touch the puffins but be careful – the edge is a bit dodgy.
Nearer to Durness is Faraidh Head. It’s not far, but it’s spectacular, to walk out on the east side of the headland and back by the west and the craft village of Balnakeil. On the wait out we have watched eider ducks arriving from Scandinavia through the sea with their ducklings. Near the headland the sea flows into huge rock pools and you can watch the seals playing from above – but don’t look in bad weather. It’s distressing to be unable to help. The return is by a vast beach and you may see gannets diving. [edit text]  [editors]
