Travel guide to Eigg

Eigg is one of the Small Isles or Inner Hebrides. It has had a turbulent history, the worst incident being in the 16th century when around 400 MacDonalds were suffocated in a cave during a dispute with the Macleods. See http://www.thehendrys.freeserve.co.uk/eigg/eigg.htm#Eigg
Later the MacDonalds of Eigg suffered after the suppression of the Jacobite rebellions and in the 19th century the Highland clearances took their toll as humans were expelled from their homes to make way for sheep. The 20th century didn’t see an end to the islanders’ problems as they had more than one Laird whose antics did them no good but in 1997, after massive publicity and widespread donations, the islanders joined in forming the Eigg Heritage trust with the Scottish Wildlife Trust and the Highland Council. Their future should be better!
