There are two major routes to the far north of Scotland; one by Inverness and the slower one by Fort William. Particularly if it's the north-west you want, you should go at least one way by the latter route for its truly spectacular scenery. You can also head westwards to the fine port of Mallaig via Glenfinnan and Arisaig or south to Oban and the western isles.
Nearer at hand you have the highest mountain in the UK, Ben Nevis, Loch Linnhe, Loch Eil and the flight of canal locks [all loch/k spellings deliberate!] leading to the Caledonian Canal.
It is a fine holiday centre with any number of places of exceptional beauty within range of a day trip and that combines with great rail routes and adequate shops.
You may wonder at the omission of more about the town itself. You can draw your own conclusions! [edit text][editors]
