Travel guide to Gairloch

Gairloch is more like a resort than anywhere between Kyle of Lochalsh and Ullapool; i.e. not really like one at all but more commercialised than other coastal spots around. It has not attracted enough visitors to sprawl and its beach remains delightful. It is a great centre for exploring a large part of the NW coast. It’s close to Poolewe [qv] and the Garden of Inverewe. There’s a B road north up the west side of a pleasant peninsula to Melvaig, from where you can continue on foot to the lighthouse at Rubha Reidh. Going S you can either veer west onto the A832 towards fabulous Loch Maree and Kinlochewe [qv] or turn west onto the B8056 to badachro [qv] and Red Point from where there is a delightful coast path to the Youth Hostel at Craig and onto Diabaig [see report]. What a fabulous choice and in addition there’s the lovely track inland just to the South of Flowerdale and its waterfall.
