Glenfinnan is known primarily for two things. There is also a travel tip on the site for boat trips down lovely Loch Shiel.
The two things are the fine viaduct on the superb Fort William to Mallaig rail line and the memorial to ‘the 45’, the Jacobite rising of 1745 that reached as far as Derby in England and had the Hanoverian monarchy trembling. It ended disastrously for the participants the following year when the Jacobite forces were mowed down at the battle of Culloden – which was the beginning of the end for the old highland way of life. The monument was erected early in the 19th century and now belongs to the national Trust for Scotland, who have a visitors, centre nearby.
The viaduct is a wonderfully scenic structure as it conveys the railway around a bend to pass the end of Loch Shiel, although many thought it would deal a death blow to the scenery. The old station forms a rail museum.
