Gloucester is an old city which has been important throughout living memory because of its position in relation to Wales. Its dukedom has always been reserved for the Royal Family and was occupied by Richard III during the reigns of Edwards IV and V.
The city was an important port, being connected by canal to the sea. At the docks there are excellent examples of Victorian warehouses and a Waterways museum.
Its cathedral marks perfection in the art of fan vaulting and is a masterpiece of the perpendicular or rectilineal style. [edit text]  [editors]
