Gretna Green
Gretna Green is a well known place-name. You could be disappointed, on seeing it, to find that it has none of the scenic appeal correctly associated with Scotland. In fact its fame is based on a simple geographical fact, a historical anomaly and a general love of anything that sounds romantic.

The geographical fact is that it is only one mile into Scotland by its southernmost boundary with England, near Carlisle. The historical anomaly is that from the middle of the 19th century Scottish law was much easier than English for couples, particularly couples where at least one party was under 21. Young couples to elope and head with all speed to Gretna Green, sometimes with parents in hot pursuit. When they arrived in time, they were often hastily married by the local blacksmith and it’s the old smithy that visitors want to see.

Love of romance means that Gretna Green is still a very popular site for marriages, even though the legal anomaly is no longer relevant. [edit text]  [editors]
