Travel guide to Hebden Bridge
The old packhorse bridge.
The old packhorse bridge.
Hebden Bridge, part of Calderdale in West Yorkshire, gets its name from the old packhorse bridge over Hebden Water that now carries pedestrians only, always with ducks being fed on the river near it.
Hebden Water joins the Calder at this point and the latter river, together with the railway, the Rochdale Canal and the road point to Halifax in one direction and Todmorden in the other, with a road going off to Haworth, home of the Bronte sisters in the 19th century.
Nearby is the National Trust owned beauty spot of Hardcastle Crags, centred on the old water and later steam Gibson Mill, now restored as a visitor centre.
The station in Hebden Bridge has won several awards and there is a fine marina on the canal. [edit text]  [editors]
