Travel guide to Ilkley
'On Ilkley Moor Baht 'At' is sometimes regarded as Yorkshire's national anthem and must be one of the best known of all UK folk songs. 'Baht 'At means without a hat and it simply relates the death of somebody who has been courting on the moor without his hat, to be subsequently eaten by 'us all' via worms and ducks.
Ilkley is a really pleasant town, forming part of the Bradford Metropolitan District. It is the terminus of minor railway lines from Leeds and Bradford [joining at Shipley].
The moor is very picturesque and includes the Cow and Calf Rocks, a nursery for would-be climbers, many ancient cup and ring markings and the swastika stone, thought to be Yorkshire's oldest rock carving.
In the town, two places that should be regarded as musts are the Manor House Museum and All Saints church, which houses Ilkley's Saxon crosses. [edit text]  [editors]
