Travel guide to Inverness

Inverness, Scotland.

‘Inverness’ conjures up a picture of the approach to the north of Scotland with its dramatic highland and island scenery or to Loch Ness, the alleged home of Nessie, the monster. It also has a football team as attractively named as any in the UK, Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

However the city itself may come as a disappointment. Tourist propaganda concentrates more on the region than the place. This is understandable, when the castle dates only from the 19th century and the cathedral spires were never added because funds ran out.

However it has to be a good base for anybody wanting to see the region. In whichever direction you have not come, you will find something near at hand well worth seeing. The battlefield of Culloden will appeal to those who are interested in military history. Cawdor Castle is wonderful. The islands at the head of Loch Ness and both sides of that loch provide fine scenery. Many points on the east coast and the NW highlands can be seen in a day trip [edit text] [editors]
