Travel guide to Iona
Iona is an island situated off the far west of the Ross of Mull and is reached by ferry from Fionnphort. [qv] It’s a car ferry but you have to get a permit to take a car and you will need a mighty good reason. Assume you’re leaving it.
Columba founded a Christian settlement here in the 6th century but don’t assume that everything you see is ancient –listen and you’ll hear some fair nonsense. The abbey buildings date largely to 20th century restoration. The picturesque ruins of the Nunnery are older, dating to the 13th century but the really ancient things are the crosses. St Martin’s Cross dates from the 8th century.
It’s a lovely island with some fine beaches but, if you want to see it at its best [horrid hindsight speaks here], try to stay there overnight or at least to be there early morning or evening in the summer or right out of season. Feelings of spirituality can feel pretty remote if you’re one of a crowd of visitors! [edit text]  [editors]
