Derwent Water from Cat Bells
Keswick is one of the very few towns in the English Lake District other than the Windermere Group. It is farther north near Derwent Water and has attracted tourists since Victorian times at least.
It's the setting rather than the town itself that makes it a great place and in particular the wonderful steep ride up a very minor road from the side of Derwent Water up to Watendlath Tarn. This road enables those with limited walking ability to get some glorious views, provided they're not nervous passengers or drivers!
Another fine drive is right along the shore of Derwent Water and over the Honister Pass to the delightful village of Buttermere. [edit text]  [editors]
