If you aren’t expecting it, Kirkstall comes as a great surprise. You are only a very few minutes by car, traffic permitting, from the centre of Leeds and there, just to your left, what should you see but the ruins of a beautiful abbey.

It’s real enough. The abbey, founded in the 12th century was Cistertian, a daughter abbey of Yorkshire’s most beautiful, Fountains Abbey.You will find plenty of detail on http://www.kirkstall.org.uk/abbey/

The nearby Abbey House Museum is excellent, not only for the history of the abbey. It includes ‘streets’ of the 1880s [edit text]  [editors]
