Kyle of Lochalsh is where the bridge crosses to Skye. It used to be qite a major port but the ferry to Stornoway was moved to Ullapool in the 1970’s. Calmac seem no longer to operate a passenger ferry to Mallaig and the ferry to Kyleakin on Skye was replaced by the [now free] bridge.
However Kyle is worth a stop in its own right, if you are heading for Skye – or for that matter towards Lochcarron, although it entails a diversion then. [Go through Plockton to rejoin your route near Stromeferry if you want a really scenic ride.
The rail route to Kyle from Inverness is one of the most scenic in the UK, equalled though not surpassed for beauty by the one from Fort William to Mallaig.
See Achmor, Dornie and Plockton for nearby interest – all have some content on this site.
The rail journey is described at www.plockton.com/how_to_ge t_here/rail.shtml [click on 'Kyle Line'] [edit text][editors]
