Travel guide to Leverburgh

Leverburgh, previously called Obbe, is in the far south of the Isle of Harris, acquired its name in 1920, having been bought the previous year by Lord Leverhulme, one of the Lever brothers who founded Unilever. He had planned to make Leverburgh the centre of a huge fishing empire based on the shops of Mac Fisheries. Most of the main building was done and jobs were provided for local people. A second phase was planned – to accommodate hundreds of fishing boats in a new harbour. A recession delayed this phase but work was ready to proceed in 1924. Sadly for the local population, Lord Leverhulme died in 1925 and all plans for Leverhulme died with him.
There is now a car ferry run by Calmac from Leverburgh to Otternish in North Uist. Only a few miles NW is the lovely peninsula of Toe Head where you can watch gannets dive and, at the right season, look down on infant birds in their nests.
