Loch Ness, the largest fresh water loch in Scotland, forms part of the Caledonian canal that stretches from Loch Lynne to the east coast north of Inverness.
The two sides are very different. The main road from Fort William to Inverness runs on the north-east side through Drumnadrochit, where there is not one but two centres devoted to the loch’s most famous resident, Nessie. On this side the road feels crowded in by steep mountain slopes.
The other side is less frequented by traffic and there are several smaller lochs and woods as well as Foyers with its beautiful falls.
At the south-eastern end of the loch Fort Augustus is a most pleasant town, from which boat trips run on the loch and it’s great to watch boats climbing the canal ‘staircase’ through a series of canal locks to the loch. [edit text][editors]
