Travel guide to Lydford

Lydford is a very pleasing village to the west of Dartmoor between Tavistock and Okehampton. It dates back at least to when Alfred the Great was erecting fortifications against the Vikings but perhaps its most interesting piece of history is that its castle once housed the stannary prison for those who broke stannary law. The stannary towns had their own Parliament and laws.

There are at least two other things to draw you to Lydford, the first being Lydford Gorge, owned by the National Trust. [www.lydford.co.uk/gorgetext.htm] The gorge runs for about a mile and a half and contains a spectacular whirlpool and waterfall.
